Miami Light Project’s signature commission program featuring Miami’s most exciting emerging artists is back!
The 2024 program features new short-form dance and theater work representing a broad cross section of the most exciting and diverse talent in Miami’s field of emerging performance artists. This year’s commissioned artists are Arielle Francois, Junior Domingos, Lisa Kusanagi and Osmani Tellez, and Our Human Years!
Arielle Francois: Where you waited for me.
Combining dance, fashion and puppet design Where you waited for me. is a new multimedia dance performance by Arielle Francois celebrating Afro-American and Afro-Caribbean culture through Catherine Flon’s legacy. As a first-generation Haitian artist, Arielle uses her work to honor Black joy and empower women, weaving hope and the mundane magic of their lives into every aspect of her art.
Junior Domingos: Amalgam
Merging the rich traditions of Capoeira and Samba with contemporary movement, Amalgam is a new dance theater piece by Junior Domingos. Through innovative use of chairs within the traditional circle, the artist redefines these cultural roots, creating a dynamic space for both celebration and transformation.
Lisa Kusanagi & Osmani Tellez: PINKY PROMISES
PINKY PROMISES is a physical portrayal of the futile battle to break free from the palindromic cycle of relationships. In a duet, approaching ideas with childlike playfulness and curiosity, Kusanagi and Tellez investigate and explore expectations, hopes, desires, pleasures, and disappointments in the subject of interhuman relationships beyond an archetypical love and romance setting.
Our Human Years: A Flower In the Swamp
A Flower In the Swamp, weaves together music, visuals, and storytelling to explore the interconnectedness of nature, dreams, and ancestry. Composed and directed by South Florida based ensemble Our Human Years, (Nicolle Garcia, Dion Kerr, and Tim Watson), the music video recording of this new performance work is a kaleidoscopic celebration of South Florida’s rich cultural tapestry.
Miami Light Project launched Here & Now in 1999 as the first of its kind program dedicated to the commissioning of South Florida based performing and multi-media artists. In addition to a commission fee, artists who are selected for a Here & Now receive free rehearsal space, technical assistance and professional development from Miami Light Project, that extends beyond their Here & Now performance.
Since its inception, Miami Light Project has commissioned work from more than 100 South Florida-based artists, whose work has contributed to the growing reputation of Miami as a cultural center of international importance. Over 30 of those artists have gone on to perform that work in 14 states and 16 countries for an estimated worldwide audience of over 25,000!
