With Knight Arts Challenge Miami funds, Miami Light Project will launch AIR at The Light Box – a Pilot Contemporary Performance Artist Residency Program. This residency program will provide artists the opportunity to realize their full artistic vision in a creative and exciting environment. Our focus is to provide space and time for mid-career artists to research and develop new work, explore new techniques of making work, and engage our community in the process. The project will also assert the leadership role that The Light Box has played in the evolution of Miami’s Wynwood Arts District.
Building on the success of our locally based artist residency program, Miami Light Project is now in the position to expand our residencies to include internationally recognized mid-career artists. By launching AIR at The Light Box, we will offer opportunities for visiting artists in the fields of dance, theater and music to make better use of our space, share their work, interact with the community members, and inspire artistic practice and innovation throughout Miami. For the first year of this pilot program, artists under consideration include: Nora Chipaumire (New York-based Zimbabwean choreographer), Martha Redbone (New York-based musician), Pat Graney (Seattle-based choreographer), Kota Yamazaki (NY-based Japanese Choreographer), and Omar Sosa (Cuban musician).
Miami Light Project will invite and host four artists per year for a period of 2 weeks (per artist) at The Light Box. Artists-in-residence will receive housing, per diem, substantial free studio space and opportunities to present their works in its various stages of development. To assist with their research, artists will have up to six hours per day in our fully equipped black box theater and rehearsal studio.
Each 2-week residency will have a public component, which can take the form of an artist talk, an intimate discussion, a work-in-progress performance, a master class or another means of sharing the work with the community.
